How to Reupholster a Kitchen Seat
- 1). Remove the kitchen seat using a screwdriver and pliers. Note if the seat cushion has squashed down over years of use. If the cover looks loose or wrinkled then it is likely the cushion foam has compressed.
- 2). Open the seams of the seat cushion using a seam ripper. Don't rip into the existing cover; you will use this as a pattern for your new upholstery.
- 3). Spray the top of the cushion with spray adhesive. Place the adhesive side down over a piece of foam 1/2 to 1 inch thick and press until the foams are well-attached. Cut around the edges of the new foam to match the edges of the original cushion.
- 4). Place your upholstery fabric face down. Position and pin your old cover face down to the new fabric. Use your old cover as a pattern to cut out your new fabric pieces.
- 5). Assemble your new cushion by sewing the top and bottom to the sides with right sides together. Leave one side bottom seam open. Turn your cover right side out and cut hook-and-loop tape the length of your open seam. Sew the tape to the top and bottom of the seam so that the tapes are firmly attached.
- 6). Insert the cushion into the new cover and work the ends into the corners for a plump and smooth fit. Close your cushion cover with the hook and loop tape. Attach your new upholstery to the bench based on how the seat was attached originally.
