How to Make a Scarecrow for Preschool Children

    • 1). Have the preschoolers draw their ideal scarecrow and try to incorporate their vision in the design by finding or making clothing and decorations that look similar.

    • 2). Lay out the clothing on the floor, button up the flannel shirt and tuck it into the pants. Sew the shirt and pants together roughly, just tight enough that they will stay stay together; do this step at home so the children don't wait by, unoccupied, while you complete it.

    • 3). Stuff the clothing full of dry hay or straw until it's fully filled out, have each preschooler stuff a few handfuls of hay or straw. Fit a belt in the loops around the pants and tighten to a snug fit.

    • 4). Tie bottom open end of the pillow case closed by tying both corners together. Have the kids fill the remaining open end with dry hay or straw, leaving enough room at the top to tie the top end closed. Tie the top end by tying both corners together.

    • 5). Have the preschoolers draw a face on the stuffed pillow case and color in the head using markers. Position the scarecrow in the room either standing or sitting. Fit the head on top of the stuffed shirt and roughly sew it to the collar.

    • 6). Have the kids place a hat on top of the head to complete the look. Fit boots and gloves over the feet and hands to prevent kids from making a mess by pulling out the straw or hay.
