Traditional Sprung Floor Installation

    Preparation

    • Level the existing floor prior to sprung floor installation. You may be required to "float" the floor with a cement-based compound. Check for high and low spots with a construction level. Apply a thin layer of compound to the floor with a large drywall taping knife until the floor is level.

Wood Weave and Neoprene Pad Installation

    • Glue 4-by-4-inch pieces of 1-inch thick high density neoprene to the floor surface at 2-foot intervals in all directions, starting in a corner of the room. Neoprene is a better choice than steel springs, because it is less expensive, easier to install and it lasts longer and does not deteriorate like steel.

Install the wood weave using 1-by-3-inch pine boards. The first layer of boards is installed directly to the pads running in the same direction across the room, every 2 feet. The boards are screwed into the pads with stainless steel screws. The second layer of boards is installed at a 90-degree angle to the first layer above the gap between the neoprene pads. The second layer is screwed to the first layer with stainless steel screws. The second layer of boards is also installed at 2-foot intervals across the room. The third layer of boards is installed parallel to the first layer, but also in the gap between the neoprene pads at 2-foot intervals. Only the first layer is in direct line with the neoprene pads when the third layer of boards is installed. Never allow the boards to touch the walls; always leave a 1/4-inch gap between the walls and the boards.

    Subfloor Installation

    • Install the plywood subfloor to the wood weave top layer. Two layers of plywood are installed at 90-degree angles to each other. For the first plywood layer, use 3/4-inch OSB (oriented strand board or wafer-board) plywood. Start in one corner and install this layer of plywood in the same direction across the floor, fastening the plywood to the wood weave third layer with stainless steel screws. The second plywood layer is typically 1/4-inch birch plywood. Install this layer starting in the same corner, but install the plywood at a 90-degree angle to the first layer across the room. Never allow the plywood to touch the walls; always leave a 1/4-inch gap between the walls and the plywood.

    Surface Layer Installation

    • Install a .06 mil layer of cork floor padding across the entire floor. Do not allow the cork seams to overlap. Tape all of the cork seams with polyurethane tape. Install engineered laminate flooring over the entire surface of the floor. Never allow the cork and the flooring to touch the walls; always leave a 1/4-inch gap between the walls and the cork and the flooring.
