Troubleshooting a Toilet That Takes a Long Time to Refill
- 1). Turn on the water in various sinks in the house, to see if the limited water flow is normal, or less than normal, indicating a larger plumbing issue not specific to the toilet.
- 2). Check the water valve, typically located at the base of the toilet. If turned off, the valve prevents water from entering the toilet. When partially closed, it limits the amount of water going to the toilet.
- 3). Flush the toilet. If it flushes normally yet takes about 15 minutes to fill and there is a hissing sound, it is probably sediment in the fill-valve diaphragm. Open the back of the toilet and clean the sandy residue from the fill-valve diaphragm. This is the mechanism under the toilet cover, on the back of the toilet. Removing clogging grit involves unscrewing the cover from the top of the diaphragm, and picking out particles with tweezers.
- 4). Check around the base of the toilet for possible leaks. The problem may not be a slow-filling toilet but water leaking from the toilet as it fills.
