How to Time Grandfather Clock Chimes
- 1). Locate the chime selection lever on your grandfather clock and ensure that it is not set to the "Automatic" position. Choose the "Manual" position instead.
- 2). Use another clock to determine the correct time. Set the time on the grandfather clock by gently moving the minute hand in the counterclockwise direction until both the minute and the hour hands read the correct time.
- 3). Start the clock using the pendulum. Grasp the pendulum in one hand and gently move it to the left until it is slightly off-center. Let go of the pendulum, and allow it to fall into a natural swing pattern.
- 4). Regulate the timekeeping of the grandfather clock by testing the time for 7 days. After the clock has been operational for 24 hours, test the time by comparing the minute and hour hands of the grandfather clock with another clock for accuracy. If the grandfather clock reads the wrong time, adjust the minute hand by moving it counterclockwise until it reads the correct time.
- 5). After another 24 hours, test the time on the grandfather clock again by comparing it with another clock. If the grandfather clock is faster than the test clock, rotate the adjustment nut on the bottom of the pendulum one turn in the counterclockwise direction. If the grandfather clock is slower than the test clock, rotate the adjustment nut one turn in the clockwise direction. Once adjustments have been made to the pendulum, move the minute hand on the grandfather clock to the correct time by rotating the hand in the counterclockwise direction.
- 6). Continue to test the timing of the grandfather clock by comparing it with another clock for the next 5 days. Make any needed adjustments to the time by using the adjustment nut on the pendulum. Adjust the minute hand to the correct time after adjusting the pendulum.
