How to Change a Town Car Fuel Filter
- 1). Park in a safe place with a level surface if possible. Turn the air suspension switch off, if equipped; then open the hood, disconnect the black, negative battery cable and loosen the fuel filler cap.
- 2). Relieve the fuel system pressure. Remove the fuel manifold cover from the top of the engine using a Phillips screwdriver or ratchet and socket. Locate the Schrader valve on the inlet fuel line of the fuel rail, just before the first fuel injector-the valve is similar to an air valve on a bicycle tire. Wrap a shop rag around the valve to catch the squirt of fuel as you depress the small stem inside the valve with a small standard screwdriver.
- 3). Raise the rear, right side of the vehicle using a floor jack and safely support it on a jack stand. Locate the fuel filter on the frame rail near the fuel tank.
- 4). Clean the fuel filter fittings from dirt and buildup on both ends using a small brush and a shop rag to avoid fuel system contamination as you replace the filter.
- 5). Remove the hairpin clips from the fittings on both ends of the filter. Spread the hairpin legs about 1/8-inch with your fingers and push the hairpin legs into the fitting; then remove the hairpin from the fitting by pulling the end tab of the hairpin with your fingers or a standard screwdriver.
- 6). Remove the fuel lines from both ends of the fuel filter by twisting and pushing the line fittings against the filter and then carefully pulling the lines free; then loosen the filter clamp screw using a Phillips screwdriver and remove the filter from the mounting bracket.
- 1). Insert new hairpin clips on both fuel line fittings with the triangular shape on the back of the pin pointing away from the fitting opening-the hairpin legs should lock on the outside of the fitting's body.
- 2). Apply a light coat of clean motor oil to the fuel filter fittings; then install the filter on its mounting bracket with the arrow on the filter case pointing towards the engine; tighten the clamp screw. Install the fuel lines on both ends of the filter by pushing the line fittings against the filter fittings until the hairpins snap in place.
- 3). Lower the vehicle and tighten the fuel filler cap; connect the black, negative battery cable, install the fuel manifold cover and turn on the air suspension switch, if equipped. Turn the ignition switch to the on position to pressurize the fuel system; then start the engine and check for fuel leaks.
