Common Runtime Errors

    • Windows runtime errors are messages listed numerically in the Windows registry database. Error messages are generated whenever events occur that trigger runtime errors. For example, when the Windows operating system encounters a problem generated by a program that cannot run because of insufficient RAM, the random access memory, it reads the error code number presented to it by the program, in this case error code number 7, and searches its registry list of runtime errors. It then generates the runtime error message that maps to error code 7, which is an "Out of Memory" message. Runtime errors can be triggered by problems with corrupt program software, missing files, out of date files and virus attacks on computers.

Error 14 - Out Of String Space

    • The "Out Of String Space" runtime error is number 14 on the list of runtime errors. It most often occurs when users are running Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, Powerpoint or Outlook. What the error is reporting is a lack of available, unused RAM in the computer. Often the error occurs due to a problem with the program. This can mean a missing or corrupt file, or a missing or corrupt entry in the system registry. Virus infections can cause runtime errors by deleting files or editing the registry. Running a commercial virus scanner may detect a virus that has caused runtime errors. Applications may have to be re-installed after the virus has been removed.

    Error 68 - Device Unavailable

    • When a program needs to access a particular device, for example when a program has been configured to send print jobs to a specific printer, Error 68 is reported if the printer is not available. You should check that the device is physically connected to the computer and that it is switched on. If the error persists, remove and re-install any software, including device drivers, that came with the hardware device. You should also download and install the latest updates for the device drivers and related software from the device manufacturer's website.

    Error 70 - Permission Denied

    • If a user is trying to perform an action on a file, such as copying the file to a new location, but does not have permission to perform that action, an "Error 70" message is generated. However, this message is also generated if a program is open and a user tries to copy it. For example if a file is opened using Microsoft Word and a user tries to copy and paste that file to a new location while it is still open, Error 70 generates a "Permission Denied" message. To fix an Error 70 problem, shut down all programs and perform the action again. If the problem persists, there may be a problem with the program, and it might be necessary to re-install it and make sure that all up-to-date patches have been downloaded and installed.
