Rifles for Deer Control
- According to Chuck Hawks, editor of Guns and Shooting Online, the Browning BAR Mark II Lightweight Stalker, Browning BLR Lightweight '81, Kimber Model 84M Classic and the Marlin Models 336C, 336SS and the 308MX are all short- to medium-range rifles that are effective in the type of woods and brush normally found in areas near residential sites.
- Most shots to nuisance deer will be in the 100 to 200 yard range. Each of these rifles have the power to kill a deer quickly at that distance with a well-placed shot. A scope helps ensure that the bullet finds the target.
- It is critical that the deer hunter know the area and what lies beyond the targeted deer, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. If it is an unsafe rifle shot to make without the deer standing there, it is also an unsafe shot to make with the deer. Many factors could make the bullet miss the deer and go on toward a home or other place where people are.
