How to Remove Impurities From Metal
- 1). Make sure to be extra cautious when melting metal. Use protective clothing, leather gloves and safety goggles.
- 2). Add the metal you are working with to the pot. You may need to cut it into small, manageable pieces so that you only fill the pot halfway. This is because it is very dangerous to work with a full pot of molten metal.
- 3). Secure a pair of vise grips to the pot on the opposite side of the handle. Do this so that you have a way to grab the pot with both hands, which is much safer than trying to maneuver a heavy pot with one hand on the handle.
- 4). Do a safety check. Make sure that the stove grate can easily support the weight of both the pot and metal BEFORE you heat it up. It may be necessary for you to add an additional heavy-duty grate over the top of the stove's grate for more support. A collapsing stove or grate under a pot of molten metal would be disastrous.
- 5). Heat the pot until the metal melts completely. You will notice that during this process, a layer of impurities from the metal has risen to the surface.
- 6). Use the metal spoon to skim the impurities off the surface. Dispose of them in the metal bucket, and the remaining metal is clean. You're ready for the next batch.
