How to Make a Daybed Skirt

    • 1). Determine the amount of skirting fabric you need. Measure the two ends and one long side of the box springs on the bed. Add half that much again to get the length of fabric needed for the skirt.

    • 2). Buy the fabric according to your measurement. The best kind of fabric is cotton or a cotton blend. Most of these come in 36- to 45-inch widths. The average single bed measures 30 inches at the two ends and 80 inches long, so you will need approximately 6 yards of fabric.

    • 3). Take the mattress off the bed and put it aside. Place the mattress cover over the box spring and pull it tightly around the edges.

    • 4). Determine the length of the skirt by measuring from the top edge of your box spring to the floor plus two inches.

    • 5). Cut the fabric according to this measurement.

    • 6). Hem the bottom along the cut edge. Turn under 3/4 inch and press. Turn under a second time, pinning into place as you fold. Press again. Machine stitch.

    • 7). Mark the corners of your skirt. Take the measurement of one end of the box springs plus half that much again. Mark that measurement from one end of the fabric with an X. Mark that same measurement from the other end, also with an X. These X marks indicate the two front corners of your skirt.

    • 8). Draw a line on the mattress cover along the top edge of the two ends and one long side of the box springs. This will be your sewing line. Mark each of the corners at the front edge of the bed with an X and mark the half and quarter points along this line with a circle.

    • 9). Mark the half and quarter points between each of the X marks along the unhemmed edge of the fabric. Mark these points with a circle.

    • 10

Prepare to gather the skirt between each of the circles and X marks. Machine-baste between each of the marks, cutting the thread and starting a new line of stitching at each marked point. Baste another row close to the first one.

    • 11

Take the mattress cover off of the box springs. With right sides together, pin the basted edge of the fabric to the mattress cover along the sewing line you marked earlier. Match the X and circle markings.

    • 12

Pull the bottom threads of each basted section so that the fabric gathers. Evenly space the gathering along your sewing line. Pin into place as you gather. Machine-stitch.

    • 13

      Trim all loose threads.

    • 14

Press the top of the skirt along the seam away from the mattress cover.

    • 15

Place the daybed skirt over the box spring and adjust the seamed edges so that they line up evenly along the top edges of the box spring.

    • 16

Place the mattress on top. You may need to pull at the bottom of the skirt around the edges once the mattress is on top of it to make it line up evenly along the floor.
