    • 1). Decide which of the three phases you want to do. The Fat Shredder phase is used to shed fat and strengthen muscle. The Energy Booster is the second phase and is meant to maintain the results of the Fat Shredder phase while increasing your energy levels. The final phase is the Endurance Maximizer, intended to help you achieve peak physical performance in the long run.

    • 2). Multiply your current body weight by 10 to find your resting metabolic rate, or RMR. The resting metabolic rate is the amount of calories your body needs to perform daily routine functions, such as breathing, growing cells and pumping blood.

    • 3). Multiply your RMR by 20 percent, or .20, to find your daily activity burn. The daily activity burn is the amount of calories your body uses for regular movement outside of exercising. This includes routine, low-impact movement such as walking and lifting your limbs.

    • 4). Calculate your total calorie needs by adding 600 -- the number of calories required to carry out the P90X program -- to your RMR and daily activity burn. This is the amount of energy you need in a given day to complete normal routine body functions and movement plus the P90X fitness program.

    • 5). Find your fitness and nutrition level by comparing your total calorie needs with what is recommended for each of the three phases outlined in Step 1. If the number you calculated falls between 1,800 and 2,399, start with Level I of the phase you chose in the first step. If the number is between 2,400 and 2,999, start with Level II. Start with Level III if the number you calculated is 3,000 or more.
