Multifocal Lenses

• At its most basic, a multifocal lens has two different types of segments. The lower part of the lens contains a segment that helps the eye adjust to seeing objects that are close up, while the rest of the lens is powered to help you see objects that are far away. • A more modern lens that doesn’t have the lines associated with bi and trifocals is called “the progressive lens.” With a progressive lens, the range of powers of the lens is gradual and seamless. The two main advantages to this are that there are no segment lines visible to others — you can maintain a youthful appearance and not advertise that you are wearing bifocals. The other advantage is that you avoid the “image jump” — your eye can get strained from switching from one power of lens to the other, which can lead to nausea.

• More important than picking frames that can accommodate your multi focal lenses is to pick frames that are fresh, stylish and practical for your lifestyle. Frames in bright fashion colors can look youthful as well as highlight eye color. Eye frame stylists recommend picking a frame with blue accents to highlight blue eyes, for example. Frames for Your Face Shape

• You can save time and frustration by determining your face shape before you go the optometrist.
