Meditation - the Power of Daily Breath Awareness

When people think of meditation, often they hear about two main types: mantra and breath awareness.
Today I'm going to discuss breath awareness.
Breath awareness is wonderful, because breathing is something that we involuntarily do all the time without having to make a conscious effort.
It is a rare thing, in that it is something that can both happen automatically or consciously.
In this sense, it is like a bridge between our subconscious and our conscious mind.
Let me take a side step and tell you something.
The present moment is all we really have.
This is a basic yet profound truth about life which many people go through life unaware of, and it really shows in the way a lot of people conduct their lives.
The past and future don't actually exist, except as concepts in our minds.
Yet many people live their lives in the imaginary words of the past and the future, always remembering things that have happened in the past, or thinking about what might happen in the future.
Every time you do this, you are literally missing out on life itself - the present moment.
You are always breathing.
If you are alive, you are always breathing.
So, by simply being aware of the breathing, you are automatically being aware of the present moment.
And the true beauty of breath-awareness is that you can have it anywhere you want, and at any time you want.
Whilst actually sitting down once or twice a day to meditate with the eyes closed for 20 minutes is extremely beneficial and something that I recommend everyone on this planet does every day, breath-awareness doesn't have to stop there.
You can become aware of your breath in any situation, and it will instantly bring you back into the present moment.
While you are at your desk at work, become aware of your breath.
While you are driving, try it, you will become more aware of the road, it needs your awareness, it needs you there in the moment.
Even when someone is talking to you, become aware of your breathing, and you will become more aware of the present moment and therefore them as well.
That's the beauty of it, by being aware of your breathing, it doesn't put you into a trance - it makes you more aware; more aware of life itself.
