    • 1). Install gparted on your Ubuntu computer. Though on a Ubuntu LiveCD gparted is a tool installed automatically, many newer versions of Ubuntu do not have it automatically installed in the distribution. You can either find it in the Synaptic Package Manager or you can open a terminal and install it with this command:

      sudo apt-get install gparted

The Synaptic Package Manager is in the System menu under the "Administration" option. To access the terminal, click "Applications" and choose the Accessories menu.

    • 2). Open gparted. Click on the System menu and highlight the "Administrative" option. Gparted is one of the administrative utilities in that menu, which is arranged in alphabetical order.

    • 3). Select the drive you wish to partition. Click on the free space on the hard drive shown in the gparted window and click on the "New" button to open the window to create the partition.

    • 4). Specify any free space you want to leave before and after the partition, as well as the size of the partition you want in the labeled fields. Use the drop-down menus under the "Create As" field to determine whether the partition is a primary partition or another designation. Choose "NTFS" from the drop-down menu under the "Filesystem" field. Push the "Add" button.

    • 5). Click the "Apply" button on the toolbar of the main gparted window, which now shows where you put the partition in the free space on the hard drive.
