Dominica is a beautiful island, but tourists often forget to visit the capital city Roseau even though there are plenty of things to do here as well. The capital city tends to be a little overcrowded, and the noise can be bothersome if what you are looking for is a quiet vacationing spot. Still, you can find some great activities to do here; for instance, visiting the Dominica Museum where you will learn about the history and culture of these people. The museum is housed by a former court house, and is a definite must-see.

Next on your list is the Anglican Cathedral. Located in the old town, you will find the cathedral surrounded by small houses and quaint shops. You may find the cobblestone streets to be a little bit of a surprise, but they were built from ballast brought in by ships that carried here planters and early traders. If you are looking for an area where you can do some shopping, there is no better place than Cork Street. The street stretches on the Roseau River, and it has many stalls from where you can buy all kinds of items.

An interesting place to have a delicious meal is Fort Young Hotel. The hotel is housed by an old fort, built by the British during the 18th century.

If you are traveling with your kids, you should visit the Botanical Gardens. Here, you will see lots of shrubs, trees and species of flowers characteristic to the island. Also, to get around the city, hop on a bus; public transportation here is comfortable and convenient.

When looking for a little bit of history, don't forget to visit the French Quarter. Here, you can admire the old buildings made of wood and quaint balconies. The black stone cathedral is another site to visit, as the Gothic style it features is quite impressive. When you are in the mood for some exotic fruit, take a trip to the Food Market where you can find plenty of tropical goodies to buy and taste.

An interesting experience you can try while in Roseau is to go to the night fruit market, which is organized on the banks of Roseau River. Here, you can enjoy a wonderful drink made of coconut water, freshly collected, along with some roasted plantains. If you want to have a little bit of extra taste, you can also try the breadfruit.

Eating on a budget, when in Roseau, is very easy. For a more pricier meal, there are other restaurants to choose from. For instance, Calabash Heights serves great Italian food, and caters mainly to vegans since no meat is served here. You can also dine at Coconuts, a great restaurant where people with different food allergies can have a risk free meal. The place is owned by the local Minister of Health.
