XP Professional Laptop Won't Shutdown or Restart
- 1). Right-click the taskbar at the bottom of the computer and select "Task Manager" from the pop-up window. The Windows Task Manager is displayed.
- 2). Click "Turn Off" from the "Shut Down" menu. If your computer does not turn off, remove the AC adapter computer cord from the back or side of your computer to cut off the power to it or remove the battery and then reinsert it to shut down your computer.
- 3). Turn on your computer and if it runs a CHKDSK (Check Disk) scan, let it finish and automatically restart. If it does not run a CHKDSK scan, turn off your computer, click "Start," and then click "Turn Off Computer." (Note: As a safeguard, CHKDSK scans often run automatically after a computer has been shut-down unexpectedly.)
- 4). Click "Start" and then press "F8" several times, counting two seconds between each press until the "Safe Boot" menu appears.
- 5). Click "Last Known Good Configuration."
- 6). Start Internet Explorer and then click "Windows Update." (Note: Based on how you have upgraded your browser, you may have "Microsoft Update" as an option instead of "Windows Update.")
- 7). Click "Express," select the updates you want to install, and then click "Install Updates." If there are no updates to install, continue.
- 8). Remove the latest software or hardware that you suspect may have caused the system to crash. If you are unsure of which one to remove, or still experience problems, continue.
- 9). Set your computer to a previous restore point. Click "Start" and then point to "All Programs."

Point to "Accessories," point to "System Tools," and then click "System Restore." - 11
Click "Restore my computer to an earlier time," click "Next," and then select a date from the calendar. (Note: Choose a recent date such as within 24 to 72 hours to increase your chances of completing a successful restoration.) - 12
Click "Next," verify the correct restore point when prompted, and then click "Next." (Note: Alternately, click "Back" to change the restore point date and then click "Next" twice. - 13
Click "OK" on the Restoration Complete page after your computer reboots.
