Folliscope

Folliscope is considered as the most recent automated digital phototrichogram system. It is a simple USB connection-based device that is connected to a computer and screen. The small handheld apparatus contains a high definition microscopic camera. It has the advantages of clearly visualizing the hair and instantly automatically measuring different trichological parameters such as the hair density and the hair shaft diameter as well as the proportions of different hair types; terminal and the vellus hairs (Figure 1). The values of different trichological parameters can also be compared with previous older measurements for the same subject. The latter can serve as a valuable objective method for assessing the disease course and the response to therapy. There is no need to have the hair plucked or clipped and it is used on a dry scalp. Therefore, adding an immersion fluid or a hair dye is not usually needed. The folliscope has gained recent popularity in specialized hair clinics and it is increasingly being used for the routine diagnosis and follow-up of FPHL in patients.

Assessment of female pattern hair loss using the Folliscope®. The density of the hair on the scalp (hair/cm) and average caliber of the hair fibers (mm) can be calculated automatically. Note the clear variability in caliber between the individual hair fibers; a sign of female pattern hair loss.
