How to Socialize With an Adult
- 1). Earn each adult's respect by behaving appropriately when you socialize. Leave your iPod at home, try not to talk on your cell phone or text message your friends and speak in a considerate tone without using teenage slang that the adults might not understand. Also consider dressing in a conservative fashion so they'll listen to what you're staying rather than being preoccupied with how you look.
- 2). Learn a little about each person's interests so you'll have something to talk about when you see them at a social event. Ask open-ended questions about their families, jobs, education and favorite vacation spots to keep the conversation going. Listen politely without letting your eyes wander, even if you don't find the topic particularly interesting.
- 3). Talk about your hobbies, activities and goals articulately, particularly if the adult asks about your plans for a job or college and your current school projects. Be yourself, even if you think the adults won't be interested in the same things that you are-they may feel mislead if you pretend to be someone you're not.
- 4). Be respectful when other adults are socializing. Wait until they address you to join the conversation rather than interrupting them. If you're sitting at a dinner table, ensure you're minding your table manners when you speak, like waiting to talk until you've finished chewing.
