How to Configure a Stair Gate
- 1). Drill two holes into the banister about 2 inches deep. Place the hinge bar flat against the holes, and then use your drill to screw it in place. Be sure that the hinge bar is straight up and down during this process.
- 2). Place the latch bar directly across from the hinge bar. The height must be exactly the same on both bars. Make marks for this with a pencil. Then, drill two holes into the wall 2 inches deep. Place the latch bar flat against the wall, and drill two screws into the latch bar.
- 3). Hang the gate onto the hinge bar, snapping the hinge cap onto the post afterward. Make sure that the hinge cap sits on securely.
- 4). Add the swing control clip to the gate if it is at the top of the stairs. This is a safety precaution that will make sure that the gate does not swing outward.
- 5). Adjust the gate width as necessary until it is one-eighth-inch from the latch.
