When you bring home a kitten, you're giving yourself a friend for life.
The only problem is the kitten won't stay small and sweet forever.
Before you know it, you have a full grown cat, and a house full of destroyed furniture.
Want to save your furniture and your sanity? Try building your cat a scratching post, from scratch! Here's how to do it: A good first option is to try something simple.
It won't be pretty, but it will be cheap, and your cat will love it.
Take a piece of scrap carpeting and either staple or nail it to a piece of plywood.
Next, prop the carpet covered plywood against the wall.
That's it.
If you don't like the look of this scratching post, put it out of sight.
If you really want your cat to fall in love with his or her new post, rub catnip over it.
Your cat will be over the moon, and will leave your furniture alone.
Another idea is to cover a piece of wood with sisal rope.
To do this, you'll need a piece of wood, about 8' long, and some plywood, enough to make a strong base.
First, place the wood vertically on top of the plywood, and nail or screw the two pieces together.
Now take the sisal rope and wrap it around the wood post, gluing it every inch or so.
Let the glue dry, and then hand it over to your cat.
You might want to try more cat nip for this project as well.
The final idea is to go to your local hardware or big box store, and purchase a standing paper towel holder.
If you can find one made of wood, all the better.
Take a long piece of twine and wrap it around the holder, gluing every inch or so.
Once again, let this dry, and rub it down with some cat nip.
