How to Become a Food Handler
- 1). Sign up for a class locally or online that meets the requirements of your jurisdiction. Each state or county offers these courses; however, you can take a course from a private provider as long as that course meets the approval of the jurisdiction in which you want to work. You also can obtain a booklet from your state, county, or city that contains the information you need to learn to pass the safe food-handling test.
- 2). Complete the course or study the booklet. A food handler's class lasts an hour or slightly more. You can take notes if it helps you remember the specifics about handling food, such as safe storage and cooking temperatures.
- 3). Take the test. Some jurisdictions offer testing at their offices or online. The jurisdictions may charge fees for testing and issuing the license. Some do not take checks, but accept cash, debit or credit cards. Most jurisdictions consider 70 percent to be an acceptable passing grade.
