How to Replace the Fuel Rail on a 1990 Jeep
- 1). Turn off the engine and open the hood. Disconnect the negative battery cable by turning the bolt counterclockwise with the ratchet and socket. Twist and pull the cable connector until it comes off the negative battery terminal. Release the fuel system pressure by depressing the valve in the pressure testing fitting (it looks like a tire valve). Label each fuel injector connector, one through six, with the tape and marker and disconnect the connectors from the fuel injectors.
- 2). Disconnect the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator if the regulator is located on the fuel rail.
- 3). Disconnect the fuel line from the fuel rail. There may be a worm drive clamp that needs to be unscrewed or a spring clamp that needs to be squeezed. If so equipped, also remove the fuel return line from the pressure regulator.
- 4). Remove the bolts securing the fuel rail to the intake manifold. Gently rock the fuel rail back and forth to release the injectors from their seats in the intake manifold.
- 5). Install the fuel rail so that all of the injectors are seated in their intake manifold bores. Firmly press the injectors into the seats. Install the retaining bolts by turning them clockwise by hand. Torque these bolts to 20 foot-pounds.
- 6). Reconnect all fuel lines to the fuel rail and pressure regulator. Reconnect the pressure regulator vacuum fitting.
- 7). Reconnect the negative battery cable by sliding the connector over the terminal and tightening the bolt to 10 to 15 foot-pounds.
- 8). Start the engine and check for leaks.
