Ramadan in Egypt
This month is a Holy Month for all Muslims as they fast from eating food and drinking starting from the dawn till the sunset time, where they break their fasting and it is a Sunna (habit has been taken from Prophet Mohamed) during this month Prophet Mohamed received the inspiration of the Holy Quran. Every Year this month starts 10 days earlier, and Muslims prepare for this month with joy and happiness by Hanging Fanous ( Lambs with different shapes and colors; some of them you just can light it wish candles) and they decorate the streets with colorful decorations and banners refers that Ramadan is coming soon. During Ramadan you will find the streets are empty by the sunset time, all people going back home and all the family are gathering by the dinning table before the announce of the fast breaking. Muslims break their fasting once they here (El Azan) The call for prayer.
It is known about Egyptian (Appetite) so before the month starts they prepare special deserts for Ramadan such as Kunafa, Katayef, Khushaf which is a cocktail contains, raisins, apricots, dates & Black plums, also a popular apricot juice called Qammar El Din. And about T.V; you will find it full of series and a wide variety of shows and programs, most of it is Islamic. And Common programs about quizzes which attracts a lot of audience. The month of Ramadan is the month of mercy & good deeds by nature; this month is spiritual and not only about fasting from food and drinks it is about keeping away from committing sins prohibited by Islam. So Muslims during this month try to control their behavior and keep the religious deed like praying on the exact time reading the Holy Quran as they have to finish reading all Quran in this month.
Surprisingly the Christians like and enjoy Ramadan atmosphere (not the religious sense) but the food variety, and other food stuffs which is available only during the month of Ramadan. Also they enjoy the T.V shows and the Christian's feelings are not hurt during this month and consider the religious terms and conditions of the Muslims during the fasting time. Moreover some of the Christians share this with their Muslim friends regarding not eating during the day somehow and share the break fasting with them.
During this month most of the restaurants and coffee shops are closed during the day and start to be open after the break fasting as not much people go to eat or drink on this time. Also you will find the gathering of friends and families by Sohor time ( the time they eat before fasting) if you have Sohor in some restaurant you will enjoy some kind of shows offered by some of coffee shops all the people in the country weather they are Muslims or Christians enjoy the joyful atmosphere.
