    • 1). Right-click any empty space on your desktop. Click "Properties." The display property box will come up. The "Theme" is the first option selected. Click the down-arrow under "Theme" to bring up more theme choices. The theme combines the background, icons and color of your desktop into one design.

    • 2). Click the "Desktop" tab to alter the image, position and color of your background. Select any of the backgrounds from the list or click "Browse" to browse through alternate backgrounds. Change the position of the background image to either stretch across the screen, be centered in the middle or tile across the screen in small multiple images.

    • 3). Click the "Screen Saver" tab to change the screen saver and the screen saver settings. Click "Settings" to change the settings of the screen saver. Each screen saver comes with different settings.

    • 4). Click the "Appearance" tab to change the color of windows and buttons, the entire color scheme of the desktop and the font size of the icons.

    • 5). Click the "Settings" tab to adjust the display, resolution and color quality. Consult your monitor's user guide for its maximum screen resolution prior to adjusting the resolution setting. Most Windows XP programs run on 32-bit color quality by default, but older games and programs may require you to adjust the color quality to 16-bit.

    • 6). Click "Apply" to apply any settings you change.
