Witer's block afflicts just about every writer at some point in time - yes, even that famous author that you admire so much will have had this problem at some time in their career.

At it's simplest writer's block is simply running out of ideas - maybe you just can't think of anything to write about, or, you have the subject you wish to write about but you can't think of the words and sentences to string together to communicate your ideas.

If you find yourself in this situation the worst thing you can do is try to force it. This will only make you more and more frustrated which will make the problem worse not better.

Take a break. Just go and do something completely different for a while.

Having taken this break, you'll very often find that when you get back to your writing, the ideas start to flow again.

We've all heard the phrase 'just sleep on it', but often this can indeed be a solution. Just go to bed with the subject you're trying to write about on your mind. If you do this, very often you'll find that your mind appears to sort itself out during the hours of sleep and when you wake up the next day, as if by magic, you know exactly what you need to write about, and the words flow seemingly effortlessly.

To try to keep writer's block at bay, you should try to get into the habit of writing something every day. This process is habit-forming. Writing will become as much a part of your daily routine as breathing, eating and sleeping. And like anything we do habitually, it will eventually become almost automatic - it will be something that you do and don't have to think too much about anymore, it will feel natural.

One thing that you really mustn't do if writer's block strikes is beat yourself up about it. This will only make things worse. Getting uptight will only reinforce the writer's block. To get unblocked you really do need to learn to relax.

A really good habit to get into is to carry a notebook with you wherever you go and keep it by your bed when you're asleep. Any ideas you get, note them down so that you don't forget them. This way you'll have a ready supply of ideas to kickstart your creative juices when it comes to think about subjects to write about.
