There are so many great women in tennis, Take Billie Jean King for instance.
In 1967 Billie Jean King was selected as Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year, she went on to be named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the year in 1972, making her the first woman to acquire this reward.
Another great female tennis player is Maria Bueno, a Brazilian native.
Bueno started playing tennis at an early age and at the age of 12 she went on to win her first tournament.
Throughout her career Bueno was the first non- American woman to successfully capture both the Wimbledon and the U.
S championships.
Then in 1960 Bueno became the first woman to win the women's double title at all four Grand Slam tournament in a year.
Another early starter in this great sport is Dorothea Chambers, a native from England she won her first seven ladies singles in 1903.
In 1921 she retired from single competition but continued as double player till 1927.
From 1924-1926 she was captain of Britain's Wightman Cup team and in 1928 she turned to professional coaching.
Another great American tennis player from the US is Tracy Austin.
Tracy, like many other tennis players started her career at a young age also.
Austin is considered the World's number 1 tennis player from the United States.
