    • 1). Measure the width and length of your pillow. If you are covering a foam cushion, measure the width, length and height.

    • 2). Cut two pieces of fabric that measure the width of the pillow by the length. If you are using a cushion, cut two pieces of fabric that measure the width plus height of the cushion by the length plus height of the cushion.

    • 3). Place the two pieces of fabric on top of each other, with right sides facing in. Pin together along one side.

    • 4). Adjust the stitch length on your sewing machine to the longest length. Baste the pinned together side of the fabric.

    • 5). Press the seam you just basted flat. Place the zipper face down on the wrong side of the seam and pin in place. Use a zipper that is longer than the seam. Align the top of the zipper with one edge of the seam. You'll trim the extra length off later.

    • 6). Attach the zipper foot to your sewing machine. Position the needle on the left side of the foot and sew the zipper to the fabric on both sides of the tape.

    • 7). Remove the basting stitches from the seam with a seam ripper. Unzip the zipper. You can trim any excess zipper at this point.

    • 8). Place the fabrics on top of each other again, with the right sides facing in. Pin the other three sides together, then sew with a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

    • 9). Turn the fabric right-side-out, and then slide the pillow or cushion inside. Zip the zipper.
