Chinese Betrothal Gifts
- Betrothal gifts are traditionally packaged in a wedding basket. Depending on the number of betrothal gifts, the basket may have many levels or tiers. It is not necessary to purchase the wedding basket, as these can be rented from wedding cake shops. The dowry that was agreed upon during wedding negotiations is wrapped in a red cloth or red packet.
- The betrothal gifts can be delivered as much as three months before the wedding to as little as three days before the wedding. There is no specific time as long as the betrothal gifts are received before the wedding. The wedding date and delivery date of the betrothal gifts are calculated carefully so significant days that would be considered lucky are used as delivery dates. The bride and groom's birthdays factor into the best date for delivery.
- The items included in the betrothal gift from the groom to the bride will include wedding cakes, an even number of oranges and tangerines, two brandy bottles, a minimum of six cans of pork legs, two pairs of phoenix and dragon candles and any betrothal jewelry from the groom's family. If the bride and groom are Cantonese then an entire roast pig is included instead of canned pork legs and four items of gold are also placed in the betrothal gifts.
- The gift to the groom is referred to as the dowry. This may be a specific sum of money or can be in the form of gifts and even land. Traditionally the dowry encompasses what the bride will take with her into her husband's home. This includes furniture, linens and clothing. Very wealthy families would include property, such as fields and mountains in the dowry. As traditions have changed, the dowry gifts have become diverse and modern.
