How to Remove Tree Mold From Roof Shingles

    • 1). Inspect your shingles often for mold. Mold will manifest itself as dark streaks on the roof. Cut back any trees that are overhanging the roof to help prevent future mold from occurring. You can test to see if the stains are actually dirt or mold by applying a small amount of bleach to the area. If it is dirt the stain will remain; bleach will clean away the mold.

    • 2). Climb a ladder and apply an oxygen bleach cleaner, such as Oxi Clean, or a shingle cleaner directly to the shingles. Both shingle cleaner and oxygen bleach cleaner should be mixed with water according to the directions on the package. Mix them together in a large bucket and allow the solution to set for approximately 45 minutes for best results. This solution can be applied with a pump sprayer or a sponge. If you are using a sponge, take care not to scrub the shingles because this will remove the grit from the shingles.

    • 3). Use a hose to rinse the cleaner from the shingles. You will want the hose to have a good amount of pressure so you can use a nozzle with a fine spray. Hold the hose approximately three feet away from the shingles and rinse until they are clean. Take care if you are walking around on your roof while the shingles are wet. It may be best to stay on the ladder and have someone hold it for you so you do not slip.

    • 4). Apply zinc strips to the top of the roof line once your shingles are clean. They are sold in 50-foot rolls that are usually enough to cover the top of one house. Zinc strips are installed all across the top of the shingles and release zinc ions onto the roof when it rains. They are typically installed with either roofing nails or an adhesive. The ions will wash down and prevent mold and mildew and other stains from forming.
