Consider the Oleaster (Eleagnus x.
ebbingei) also known as the Russian olive.
This lovely little tree, whose mature height is ten to twelve feet high, boasts of dense, oblong, silvery leaves and delicate greenish-white flowers in petite, fragrant clusters that display themselves in the sparse winter months.
As if that isn't a delightful sight to the eyes during the barrenness of winter, the fruit follows with berries that are yellow, to reddish-purple and somewhat resemble olives, hence the nickname, Russian olive.
Nurseries will have an assortment of Viburnum cultivars that produce faintly scented flowers from the months of November through to March.
Viburnum shrubs are a widely popular, flowering landscaping and gardening plant of choice.
The color of the flowers depends on the particular cultivars, but typically the flowers are white or pinky color with the florets appearing in flat clusters.
Then there is the infamous Honeysuckle, the winter varieties.
The Honeysuckle is a hardy, semi-evergreen that is even more attractive when the sweetly-scented sprays of small, white flowers appear in late winter or early spring.
The nectar that the flowers produce is edible and sweet.
Little berries appear that can be red, blue or black but the berries are not edible.
A few cultivars have edible berries, but you would certainly have to check with your favorite plant nursery or tree nursery to be absolutely sure that you know which kind you are purchasing.
If you are unsure, do not risk eating the berries; since the majority of cultivars produce the ornamental, but poisonous berries.
The Honeysuckle is a lovely shrub to consider for winter color.
There is also the Camellia sasanqua, a flowering shrub that produces lovely flowers that resemble apple blossoms, displaying themselves from the fall to the early months of winter.
Or how about the Chinese Juniper, with its bluish-green foliage and its dense exhibit of delicate yellow flowers, or the Winter Daphne with its fragrant blooms of creamy white, soft pink or yellow flowers amidst the evergreen leaves.
There are also heaths, which are relatives of the Scottish heather which are low-growing evergreen shrubs that display delicate light pink or reddish-purple, bell-shaped flowers.
