    Rollup Shades

    • Rollup shades are made from weather-resistant textile, vinyl or wood and are spooled around a central core. The core is rolled up or down using either a pull cord or, in the case of an automatic system, a remote control. Rollup shades are also highly customizable, available in both cool and warm neutral colors as well as darker greens, reds and even purples. Still, while most materials used in rollup window shades are weather resistant, they are also thin and without a secured bottom half, which means a strong wind can cause violent shaking that can actually damage the window they are covering.

    Roman Shades

    • Used for both indoor and outdoor applications, Roman shades are much like rollup shades except that they bunch at the top creating a decorative effect instead of rolling up on a core. Like rollup shades, Roman shades are available in several colors ranging from light and reflective white, cream and light beige to dark greens, brown and even black. Roman shades face many of the same problems as rollup shades but also retain water in the bunches of material that form when they are not covering a window. Left to linger, this water can create mildew stains on textile shades.

    Shutters

    • The most recognizable exterior shade is the shutter. Available in solid panels or adjustable slats, shutters are made from wood, metal or vinyl and represent a solid barrier between the exterior and the window. While more expensive, shutters are more durable and feature solid support from top to bottom, which means they will not tear or push through a window on the force of a strong wind. Shutters are available in several colors including white, red, blue, black and gray. These colors are either painted on or, in the case of vinyl shutters, mixed into the material during construction.

    Outdoor Blinds

    • Like indoor blinds, outdoor blinds come in both vertical and horizontal styles and perform much the same task. Opening and closing either by hand or electronic control, these shades are common on patio windows. Because of this, exterior blinds are light and natural colors that complement exterior surroundings. Colors include white, natural wicker and the clay-like terracotta.
