How to Remove the Head Gasket of a 2.5 L Buick

    • 1). Remove the negative battery cable by loosening the terminal nut with a wrench. Relive the pressure from the fuel system by opening the valve on the fuel rail. Place the drain pan under the radiator. Open the valve with a wrench and drain the engine coolant into the drain pan. Remove the cover from the air cleaner unit by unsnapping it.

    • 2). Remove the air cleaner filter. Remove the retaining nuts from the air cleaner using a wrench. Remove the air cleaner from the engine. Remove the lower air inlet using a wrench. Relieve the tension from the serpentine belt by turning the belt tensioner with a wrench. Lift the belt from the pulleys and then gently allow the tensioner to go back into place.

    • 3). Remove the alternator bolts using a socket and ratchet. Remove the alternator from the Buick. Remove the bolts from the power steering pump using a socket and ratchet. Do not disconnect the power steering pump hoses. Position the pump out of your way. Label each spark plug wire with the marker and masking tape noting the proper location of each.

    • 4). Grasp the boot of the spark plug wire and pull each one from the spark plug. Unhook the throttle control cables from the throttle body. Remove the bracket using a wrench. Remove the valve cover from the cylinder head using a socket and ratchet to loosen the nuts. Label each of the rocker arms using the marker and masking tape.

    • 5). Remove the rocker arms by loosening the bolts with a socket and ratchet. Remove the push rods from the cylinder head, labeling each one with the marker and masking tape as you remove them. It is important that they go back to their original location if you are reassembling the engine.

    • 6). Unplug the wiring harness from the intake manifold, throttle body and the cylinder head. Remove the oxygen sensor connection. Remove the bolts holding the power steering pump bracket to the intake brace under the manifold using a socket and ratchet. Remove the torque strut and the mounting bracket using a socket and ratchet.

    • 7). Remove the bolts from the rear alternator bracket using a socket and ratchet. Label the vacuum hoses on the cylinder head and the intake manifold and then pull them off the connections. Remove the upper radiator hose using a screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp. Place the wheel chocks behind the rear wheels of the Buick.

    • 8). Raise the front of the Buick using the automobile jack. Place a jack stand under the vehicle near the jacking point and raise it to the frame. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold using a wrench to loosen the bolts. Remove the jack stand from under the Buick. Lower the car to the ground. Label and unfasten the fuel line quick connects.

    • 9). Remove the transmission fill tube using a wrench. Remove the head bolts from the cylinder head using a socket and ratchet. Remove the cylinder head with the intake and exhaust manifolds attached. Remove the cylinder head gasket.
