The only rival to Madurai's historic and cultural enamour is the capital city of Chennai. Both these cities are well connected and cheap flight tickets are available from Madurai to Chennai which makes both of these cities a joint priority on tourists' lists. Madurai being the epicenter of a number of the southern ruler's kingdoms as well as the scholars is rich with temples and other historical structures. This town which has been declared UNESCO heritage site is home to intricate, splendid architecture of the Pallavas. The rock carvings and ancient temples of the Pallavas are a major attraction and give tourists an insight into the lives of ancient Indians and their rulers. The Santhome basilica built on the mount of St. Thomas which is considered the spot where St. Thomas was martyred. This basilica is highly regarded by the Roman Catholics and is frequented by the tourists on account of its beautiful architecture.

The city of Chennai being one of the most urbanized in the country also has a number of nightclubs and an active nightlife in general. The Spencer's Plaza is the oldest shopping mall in the country and is one among the many shopping options available to tourists. Chennai is also well known for its typical Tamil cuisine. Hotel Saravana Bhavan which originated in Chennai is now known worldwide for its simplistic yet delicious delicacies.

Chennai is also well known for its display of Tamil and Indian arts and crafts. The city also plays host to several Bharatanatyam programmes showcasing the classical Indian dance form. Its characteristic poses and the grace and finesse involved in the performances have captivated dance enthusiasts from all around the world. The Carnatic music shows in the city are extremely popular among Indian classical musicians all over the country and all over the world. The Madras music festival provides budding musicians an opportunity to showcase their talent and at the same time it includes performances from veteran musicians which attract a large audience. Held annually in December – January, this programme has a number of large and small kutcheris which are Carnatic music concerts.
