    • 1). Check to see whether your power steering reservoir is full of liquid. This is usually a clear or plastic reservoir near the motor. It may be metal, and usually it is labeled clearly. If the reservoir is not full, fill it up. If it is, continue to Step 2.

    • 2). Check your drive belt to see whether it is worn or cracked. You can locate the drive belt easily by checking the directions in your owner's manual. If it looks fine, your rack and pinion system is probably going bad.

    • 3). Note whether the car is difficult to steer when you first start to drive it.

    • 4). Check to see whether the steering seems to stiffen or catch when you are making a turn.

    • 5). Notice whether the steering column seems to be looser than usual.
