How to Bypass the Oxygen Sensor on a 1998 Ford Contour SVT
- 1). Verify that the engine and exhaust is completely cool. You cannot work on the exhaust system and bypass the oxygen sensor while the exhaust system is still hot without burning yourself.
- 2). Place the jack under the front jack point located behind the radiator. Jack up the vehicle.
- 3). Place jack stands under the front pinch welds and lower the SVT onto the jack stands.
- 4). Climb under the SVT and locate the oxygen sensors. There are two of them. One is located before the catalytic converter (the enlarged, oblong "egg" that sits in line with your exhaust system) and one is located after your converter.
- 5). Unplug the O2 sensor's electrical wiring. This is a plug-style connector so it will pull right off.
- 6). Attach the O2 removal tool to the socket end of the socket wrench and remove the oxygen sensor by turning it counterclockwise with the socket wrench.
- 7). Insert the dummy O2 sensor into the hole where the old oxygen sensor was. This will bolt into the exhaust the same way that the oxygen sensor did. The dummy sensor does not have an actual sensor in the component that will relay the correct information to the ECU. Instead, it feeds the ECU what the ECU "wants" to see.
- 8). Connect the electrical wiring to the dummy O2 sensor.
- 9). Lower the SVT to the ground and turn the engine on. Your SVT should not throw any error codes in the ECU regardless of how you tune the engine from now on.
