How Did Your Pooch Get That Fat??

Your dog is overweight When you cannot feel the bones when you run your hand along his backbone. If you can't feel the bones quite easily then you have an overweight and unhealthy dog. Ideally you need to be able to actually see his rib bones when he is out for his daily runs, but then again I guess if he is overweight he doesn't get a daily run and that, my friend, is a big part of your problem

If your furry friend slouches to the side when trying to sit instead of sitting up straight then you know that you have a problem and it is time to take some drastic action....

1. The first course of action to rectify the problem is to analise the reasons for those extra pounds. And , of course, the two main reasons are lack of a regular, and adequate, exercise regime and too much food, probably the wrong kind of food, but the good news is that those two reasons can be easily rectified.
Get him back onto a diet of healthy home made dog food and you are halfway to solving your problem.

2. The second thing to realise is that an overweight dog is potentially an unhealthy dog, and an unhealthy dog is not good for the dog or, for that matter, you. Think of those exhorbitant vet bills that you will face when your dog falls ill. One other very important thing to think about is this,if your dog is overweight and not getting enough exercise there is a good chance that you are in the same boat, so that should be enough incentive for you to start taking some decisive action. This may be the time to call in a professional dog trainer for some much neede advice.

3. But take heart, all it takes to get things going in the right direction is a little effort and commonsense on your behalf. Here's the thing, all todays dogs evolved from hunting dogs who had to hunt for their food. These dogs sometimes went for days without eating until they actually caught their next meal and there certainly weren't any overweight pooches in those days. In my earlie, r days I used to hunt wild pigs in New Zealand on a semi professional basis and we used to only feed our dogs every second day and they were the healthiest and fittest dogs I have ever encountered.

4. So the moral of this story is that it is not natural for dogs to be fed two or three times a day. Once a day is ample and, as long as they have access to good clean drinking water, you will soon begin to see the changes in your dogs physique. Try not to give your dog to much pre-packaged, manufatured food as much of it contains far too much fat and who knows what sorts of nasty chemicalls and contaminants are hidden under that fancy wrapping.

5. The next thing is exercise, and going back to the hunting dogs,as they had to find their own food, they were on the move consantly so they naturally kept in good shape. So, get your pooch up and moving. Find some tracks through the bush or around the local parks and take him for a run at least once a day. This will not only help get his weight under control, but will also keep him much healthier and will probably add a few years to his life, and will certainly help keep you fit as well.Try to keep off those busy roads as all those exhaust fumes and such nasties are certainly not natural and won't do you or your dog much good.

In conclusion, if you have a good regular traing regime along with a healthy diet you will have a fit, healthy and very happy companion.
