    Heed The Regulations

    • On private land, you can hunt year-round. If you do not have access to private land, you may use state land with the season restricted from the beginning of dove season in September until the last day February, as of June 2010.

If you are hunting for coyote during a season designated for a different game, you must purchase a permit for the game currently in season. So if you are in the woods sniping for coyote during deer season, you will need to buy a deer hunting permit. Also, abide by the regulations regarding blaze orange apparel. Year-round hunters must wear at least 200 square inches of blaze orange. During deer shotgun season, wear 500 square inches of blaze orange.

Plan your hunt during legal hunting hours, which are from one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset. Coyote are extremely active during this time, so you will have a good chance off seeing game.

    Place Your Tree Stand Carefully

Set up a tree stand or a blind downwind from your shooting lane. Coyote have a keen sense of smell; if you ignore the wind, you will likely never see one. Approach your stand as quietly as possible. Coyote are sensitive to disturbances in the forest and if you approach carelessly, you will tip them off. Also, come to your stand as early as you can, so the forest will have time to settle down after you arrive.

    Lure Them In

    • Bait is permitted on private land. The carcass of another animal makes an effective coyote bait. Stake down this carcass under chicken wire to prevent the coyotes form dragging it away.

Call them in using a rabbit or deer distress call. In Rhode Island, it is permitted to use electronic calls, which may be more realistic that cans or blow calls. Start quietly and work your way up in volume. Do this for about 30 seconds and then scan the woods with your binoculars for a few minutes.

    Be Patient After Your Kill

    • If you make a kill, do not immediately get down from your tree stand. Wait quietly to see if the rest of the pack comes into your shooting lane to investigate. Coyotes have been known to step over their dead comrades without notice in order to get their turn at the bait.

    Firearms Regulations

    • Firearms may not be discharged within 500 feet of an occupied dwelling so make sure you are hunting at a safe distance. For shotgun hunters, no lead shot larger than No. 2 is prohibited, unless you are hunting during deer shotgun season when you are permitted to use buckshot. Rifles are limited to .22 caliber rimfire. There are specially designated dates when a .229 caliber centerfire rifle may be used.
