How to Replace the Master Cylinder on a 1989 Pontiac Bonneville
- 1). Disconnect the battery ground cable (black) using a wrench.
- 2). Siphon half of the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir into a plastic container using a turkey baster. Store the fluid in a safe place for later recycling.
- 3). Unplug the level sensor electrical connector from the master cylinder reservoir.
- 4). Detach the hydraulic lines from the master cylinder using a flare wrench. Cap the lines with clean plastic sheets and rubber bands to keep dirt from entering the hydraulic system.
- 5). Unfasten and remove the two master-cylinder mounting nuts using a ratchet and deep socket.
- 6). Remove the master cylinder from the engine compartment.
- 7). Hold the new master cylinder in a soft-jaw bench vise with the cylinder's front end pointing slightly down.
- 8). Thread the plastic plugs provided with your new cylinder on the outlet ports.
- 9). Fill the master cylinder reservoir with new brake fluid.
- 10
Pump slowly the cylinder piston on the back of the unit using a large ratchet extension. The piston should travel about 1 inch. Once you bleed the air from the front chamber, you will feel that the piston is hard to push in. - 11
Move the master cylinder in the vise so the front end points slightly up. Add more brake fluid to the reservoir, if necessary, to keep the container half full. - 12

Level the master cylinder in the vise and loosen one of the plastic plugs. Push the piston in about 1 inch. As you hold the piston in, ask a helper to tighten the plug and release the piston. Do this for the remaining plugs. - 1). Position the new master cylinder in place in the engine compartment.
- 2). Install the cylinder mounting nuts by hand and tighten the nuts using the ratchet and deep socket.
- 3). Thread the hydraulic lines to the outlet ports by hand and tighten the retaining nuts with the flare wrench.
- 4). Plug the level sensor electrical connector into the mastery cylinder reservoir.
- 5). Add new brake fluid to the reservoir to bring the level up to the "Full" mark and tighten the reservoir cap.
- 6). Connect the battery ground cable (black) using the wrench.
- 7). Pump slowly the brake pedal five times to remove the vacuum from the brake booster. Make sure the ignition is off.
- 8). Position a box wrench over the bleeder valve of the rear passenger's side brake assembly.
- 9). Attach a clear hose on the bleeder valve with the opposite end submerged in brake fluid in a clear plastic container.
- 10
Ask a helper to fully depress and hold the brake pedal. - 11
Loosen the bleed valve with the wrench to allow brake fluid to bleed into the plastic container. Close the bleed valve with the wrench and ask your helper to release the pedal. - 12
Repeat steps 10 and 11 until you see brake fluid without air bubbles flowing through the clear hose. - 13
Repeat steps 8 through 12 on the left front, left rear and right front brake assemblies to completely bleed the hydraulic system.
