How to Focus a Camera in the Dark

    • 1). Hold the camera very still and try to use the autofocusing system. These programs will emit either an infrared beam or a red beam of light that allows the lens to focus. Even in the lowest possible light, these will work in most cases. If you are using a point and shoot camera, you can also try to activate the built-in flash that will assist in focusing the lens.

    • 2). Switch the lens to manual focus by sliding the "AF/MF" switch on the side of lens to "MF."

    • 3). Attach the camera and lens to a tripod so you have a fixed shooting position. Since you are taking this picture in the dark, the exposure time will likely be long. You will need a tripod to keep the camera steady during exposure.

    • 4). Measure the distance from the camera to the subject using a tape measure or by walking the distance.

    • 5). Turn the external focusing ring until the lens is set to that distance. Press the shutter release to take the picture.
