Gelatin Cell

Spray the inside of a small mixing bowl with unflavored cooking spray. Mix one light-colored, powdered gelatin mix according to package instructions and pour into the bowl. Allow to set in the refrigerator and press food items replicating the parts of a cell such as fruit leather pieces, candies, a gum ball and chocolate-covered raisins into the gelatin. Prepare another gelatin mix and pour over the existing gelatin in the bowl. Refrigerate until completely set and turn over onto a plate to create a three-dimensional gelatin cell.

Cake Cell

Bake a store-bought cake mix using the directions on the box when creating a cake cell. Decorate the cake with icing as the cell membrane and press items into the cake, such as sprinkles for ribosomes and licorice to represent the endoplasmic reticulum. Consider decorating the cake with colored fondant that can be formed like craft dough in the shape of each of the cell parts.

Pizza Cell

Use a prebaked pizza crust and toppings, such as pizza sauce as cytoplasm, cheese representing the golgi bodies, pineapple chunks appearing as vacuoles, and onion slices for endoplasmic reticulum. Green pepper slices can display chloroplasts, olives replicate lysosomes and pepperoni pieces appear as centrosomes on the edible cell creation. When presenting the project to the class, make the connection between the cell parts and the foods representing them.

Fruit Cell

Use a watermelon or cantaloupe half as the actual cell with its rind replicating the cell's plasma membrane. Hollow out some of the melon to easily view the cell parts and include a small-to-medium-size orange acting as the nucleus. Cooked fettuccine noodles may appear as the rough endoplasmic reticulum and ramen noodles as the smooth endoplasmic reticulum. Sprinkling some course ground pepper over the remaining fruit represents the ribosomes. Although this edible cell may not be a delicate gourmet cuisine with its rarely combined ingredients, ensure all remaining items are able to be eaten.
