How Much Do You Really Know About Security?

When discussing home security, one of the best places to begin is to find out what you already know and what you are already doing to make yourself more secure. Security is much more than just installing a home security system in your house. It's also about identifying threats, knowing about technological advances, understanding how to operate the security products you own and, probably most important of all, awareness of the fact that you must use these products and systems at all times in order to protect your home and family as much as possible.

To begin with, you must come to grips with the fact that if a criminal wants to get into your house, he is going to get in. Your task, then, is to place as many barriers as possible between him and your family. This layering of security detection devices is what will keep you safer from the criminal element. The goals of home security are to buy you enough time to get out of the house and notify emergency responders as quickly as possible.

Of course, deterring crime is a beneficial side effect of having an alarm system installed, since studies have shown that most criminals would prefer to target homes that do not have security systems installed. In fact, one study showed that just by advertising your alarm system through signage around your property, you can lower your chances of getting burglarized by as much as 80 percent.

Getting an alarm system installed is a great first step toward making you and your family more secure. However, it is just a first step. It is one layer between you and the criminal. You need to add more layers, which will distance you from someone trying to get into your house and could possibly frustrate the criminal enough that he will leave on his own accord. Motion detectors, video cameras, driveway alarms, security lighting, proper landscaping, strong door and window locks and other security measures are all added layers that can buy you precious time to get out of the house.

It is critical to remember, though, that no matter how many layers of security you put in place, it will all be worthless if you don't use them properly. You must know their capabilities as well as how to operate them correctly so they can function at their potential. If you have any concerns or questions about any component of your home security system, seek an answer right away so you can upgrade your personal security as quickly as possible.
