    Cool-Season Grass

    • Separate and replant cool-season grasses in the fall before the ground freezes. This will allow a few weeks for acclimation to the new planting location before cold weather sets in.

    Warm-Season Grass

    • Divide warm-season grasses in the early spring. Wait until the ground is easily worked with a shovel. Avoid transplanting into overly soggy soil. Transplant ornamental grass divisions into soil with even moisture throughout the soil column.

    Method

    • Remove cumbersome grass blades by pruning the plant to 4 to 6 inches high. Dig up the entire clump of grass. Place the shovel blade in the center of the clump, and step down to divide the plant. Continue with this method to create smaller bunches. Prepare the new planting site with peat moss or humus. Replant all ornamental grass clumps immediately. Water and mulch well to help the plant adjust to a new location.
