How to Transfer Outlook Express Between Computers

    Outlook Express 5

    • 1). Go to "Start," "Find" and then "Files or Folders."

    • 2). Type "*.dbx" in the Named box and then select "Find Now." Remember the location so you can copy the files.

    • 3). Copy the files and the folder holding the files to a backup media source, such as a USB drive or disk. Hold down "Ctrl" as you click on each Outlook Express file you want to move. Right-click and choose "Send To," followed by the media source where you want to transfer the files.

    • 4). Go to "My Computer," "Desktop," right-click and choose "New Folder" on the computer that is receiving the files. Name the folder "Mail."

    • 5). Insert the media source with the saved files. Choose to copy the files to a new location when prompted. Select the new folder titled "Mail" to copy the folders.

    • 6). Open Outlook Express 5.

    • 7). Go to "File," "Import" and then "Messages."

    • 8). Choose "Microsoft Outlook Express 5" and then click "Import Mail from OE5 Store Directory." Find the Mail folder that holds the transferred files.

    • 9). Select "Import All of the Mail Folders Listed" to merge the saved email messages into the Outlook Express folders on the second computer.

    Transfer Wizard

    • 1). Ensure both computers are connected through a network (a home router) or by a serial cable. You can buy a cable at any electronics store.

    • 2). Go to "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories," "System Tools" and "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" to start the transfer wizard. Select "Old Computer" and then "Next."

    • 3). Choose "Other" in the "Select a Transfer Method" dialog box. Select the drive where you will save the Outlook Express files and click "Next." Click "Let Me Select a Custom List of Files and Settings" on the What Do You Want to Transfer? page and then click "Next."

    • 4). Click on each entry except Outlook Express and press "Alt" and "R" at the same time to remove the entries. Go to "Specific Folders" and "File Types" and use "Alt" and "R" again to remove all the entries. Select "Finish" to complete the wizard.

    • 5). Open the wizard on the second computer and choose "New Computer." Select the drive the files are saved on and complete the wizard. Follow Steps 6 through 9 in Section 1 to move the files into Outlook Express.
