Restricted Driving Permit Levels

If your license has been revoked, you may be greatly worried about what you can do at this juncture.
In some states in the US, you will have a few options available to you.
One is to see if you are eligible for an RDP, or Restricted Driving Permit.
If you need to drive for certain reasons of necessity, it will be easier to get an RDP.
Some reasons why an individual might be awarded an RDP include the following:
  • Driving to work and back
  • Driving to medical appointments
  • Driving to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings
  • Driving to and from school
The Secretary of State in your state of residence is likely the one who will give you a permit to drive, but he or she will not offer permits for more than 6 days a week or 12 hours in one day.
The Permit Levels There are 5 different levels of the RDP.
In order to actually get a permit at the applicable level, you will first have to get an alcohol test from a licensed organization and finish the suggested treatment program given by an OASA-licensed group.
The RDP stages are as follows:
  • Level 1 for someone who is a "minimal risk"
  • Level 2M for someone who is a "moderate risk"
  • Level 2S for someone who is a "significant risk"
  • Level 3 for someone who is a "high risk" dependent
  • Level 3 for someone who is also a "high risk" but not a dependent
These different stages correspond to different treatments and other conditions that you will be obligated to meet.
