Prior to riding, you child should check the bike for possible problems. Make sure the tires are inflated correctly by using a tire gauge. Check that the brakes are operating correctly. The chain should be free of rust and glide smoothly. - Safety HelmetsImage by Flickr.com, courtesy of megan ann
As of 1994, all children are required by federal law to wear a safety helmet when riding a bicycle. Helmets have been proven to reduce or prevent head trauma during a crash or fall. Check that your child's helmet fits properly and is the correct size for his age. - Wheel ReflectorImage by Flickr.com, courtesy of Neal Fowler
Have reflectors installed on the front, rear and tires of your child's bike. Children should wear reflective or neon clothing. Bicycle lights are a good idea for daytime, as well as nighttime, cycling. However, it is not recommended to ride at night. - Beware of Road HazardsImage by Flickr.com, courtesy of Kevin Dooley
Uneven surfaces can cause a crash or fall. Teach your child to look out for glass, potholes, uneven sidewalks, rocks, wet leaves and traffic. - Traffic LightImage by Flickr.com, courtesy of Ben Ostrowsky
Obey all traffic laws when riding in the street. Your child should be taught the proper hand signals when turning or slowing down. She should always ride with traffic, never against it. Approach intersections with caution.
