Photographers now-a-days are your neighbors, your co-workers and that girl laughing at the booth next to you in the Waffle House.
They aren't the guy who nods and says "Ok, I can do that.
" Sure, you want to see their portfolio.
You want to know their experience level in regards to weddings.
You also want to know if you are comfortable 'hanging out' with them.
You should be able to see your photographer as a friend for the future.
Someone you can have fun with, and be yourself with.
Your best photos will be when you are comfortable, and when you are acting like, well, you.
Your photographer shouldn't be housed up at the tripod.
They move with you, without getting in your way.
How can you know if the photographer who's work you love, is the right photographer for you? Check into engagement sessions.
The majority ofphotographers have included engagement sessions as part of their wedding packages.
Those are generally people who know they need to connect with their client.
We, as photographers want to get to know you, and feel comfortable with you prior to your wedding day, just as you should hope to feel with us.
Find out of you can purchase the engagement session on its own, without committing to the wedding photography, but do ask if you can enroll the price at a later date if you do decide to go forward with said wedding photographer.
During your engagement session, be yourself.
Allow the photographer to give you a little guidance, but don't be their puppet.
A worthy photographer would not expect you to be, well, because they'd be better than that.
They should make your session about you two, being with your fiance', and enjoying the time.
They are the voyeur, reveling in your love for one another.
If you get stuck, or just aren't 'camera' people...
let your photographer know that.
Within 15 minutes, you should be able to forget they are there, or at least take comfort in the fact that you no longer feel like an idiot with a camera shoved in your face! And, then, of course, there are the pictures.
See what pictures they produced from your session.
Do you love them? Hate them? When you combine the vibe you get with your photographer, with the end result, there should be no question on if they are the wedding photographer for you.
