Show Your Child Some Respect - Discipline in Private (Part 1)
Children don't like to get in trouble.
They do not like to be reprimanded.
And there is very little that is more humiliating for the child than being reprimanded in public.
This is even a bigger tragedy as your child gets older.
No one wants to be called out on their behavior in front of others, especially amongst peers.
Nothing can make your child 'lose face' with his peers more than to have mom or dad yell at them in public.
If you do this, you will have lost the respect of your child.
And naturally so! Take care of discipline with your child in private.
Let me be clear.
When I refer to discipline here, I am not talking about normal scolding.
Scolding your child in public may help him or her to curtail their behavior faster.
"I told you to put that back on the shelf" is scolding.
If and when your child refuses to listen and decides to push the limits or begins to throw a tantrum, then this is the time to get them out of the public eye and into a private setting where you can administer discipline.
We have all been witness to a mother or father yelling or even spanking their child in public, as in a grocery store or a department store.
One naturally assumes that the child pushed the limits too far.
But at the point that the parent takes open action in public, then that parent has lost control of the situation.
A parent always needs to maintain control during these kinds of situations.
A controlled and effective method for dealing with an unruly child in a public setting is simply to remove yourself and the child from that setting.
If in a store or some other highly visible place, then the parent would do well just to take the child and leave immediately.
In this manner, an appropriate 'talk' or any discipline that should be administered can then be done in a more private setting.
This is where it should take place, not in the public eye.
Just as you should show your child respect in the public eye, so should your child show you respect.
Open defiance or back-talk or disrespect should never be tolerated by a parent, especially if your child chooses to do this in public.
If this happens to you, then cancel whatever it is that you are doing and reprimand your child in private.
Believe me, they will be plenty embarrassed when you whisk them away in a hurry after they have spouted off to you.
They will know that they crossed a line and that they are in trouble.
With an effective method like this, most children will maintain their composure and not push the limits too far again, at least not in a public place.
The lesson will have been learned! (This article is the first installment of a three part series on simple methods that parents can follow to help maintain positive psychological health in their children.
