How to Install a Sound Card on a Toshiba Laptop With Windows XP
- 1). Check that the sound card fits the dimensions of your computer. PC cards and slots come in three different form factors, or sizes: type I, type II and type III. PC sound cards only come in type II. Navigate to your computer manufacturer's website, then look up your computer on the support page. Read the documentation to find out what sort of PC cards will work with your specific Toshiba model.
- 2). Power on your computer and boot to Windows XP. Insert the software that came with your sound card in the CD drive. If you no longer have the CD that came with the card, navigate to the sound card manufacturer's website and download the driver from the support page. While XP may sometimes automatically detect and install the software to your computer, certain features--such as software included with the card--may not be installed.
- 3). Follow the on-screen directions to install the sound card to your computer. Insert the sound card into the PCMCIA slot on the side of your Toshiba, then restart your computer. Windows XP should detect the new hardware on startup.
