    • 1). Turn off the water supply from the valve behind the toilet. Use your wrench to disconnect the water line from the tank. Remove the two floor bolts holding down the toilet base. Remove the toilet.

    • 2). Lay out a canvas tarp in the center of the floor, away from the exposed toilet drain. Fold it over twice.

    • 3). Strike the floor through the canvas tarp with your sledgehammer, breaking the tiles.

    • 4). Remove the tarp. Scoop up and discard the broken tiles with your shovel.

    • 5). Move the tarp to the next section and repeat. Continue breaking up the floor section by section, removing the broken tile as you go. Use caution about the tub, toilet drain and other areas that could be damaged by the sledge hammer.

    • 6). Go over the floor with a floor scraper to take up the residual mortar and grout. Sweep well. The subfloor is now ready for new flooring.
