Tops

• Shirts worn by emo followers typically display some type of message. It may be the name of that person's favorite band, a profound quote or a concert or music festival T-shirt. No matter what the message says, an emo shirt typically is not available on the mass market. Shirts are found in vintage or novelty shops or thrift stores and may appear old, worn or faded. Emo fans may also choose to wear hoodies with unique designs or messages printed on them.
  
  

Pants

• For both guys and girls, emo pants are almost always worn tight. This includes very dark indigo or black skinny jeans, leggings and tights. Males may wear female jeans to get the designated effect. Jeans with rips or tears, fading, ripped knees or other distressed effects are also prevalent.
  
  

Accessories

• Accessories are very important to the emo look. For males, unique belts, chains and pins adorn skinny pants and jeans. Skinny neckties, studded bracelets and thick-rimmed glasses are also favored. For females, emo style is typically characterized by childlike accessories. This may include children's bracelets, hair barrettes and candy necklaces. Emo fans are sometimes heavily pierced, with piercings in unorthodox locations such as the eyebrow, cheeks, nose and lips.
  
  

Shoes

• Shoes that emo fans wear are typically modest gym sneakers or slip-on shoes in solid colors like black or pink. Converses, Vans and other similar-style sneakers are generally worn with embellishments like brightly colored shoelaces or safety pins.
  
  

Hair and Makeup

• Both men and women may wear cosmetics as part of an emo look. Eyes rimmed with thick black liner add drama to the face. Hair is usually cut in a dramatic, sharp style like a mullet or shag with straight thick bags and angled layers. Hair may be dyed black, or other colors like pink, blue or green.
